Shop - Shopping malls
Apart from just lazing around the beach and soaking up the tropical sun, or heading out in the evening and exploring the crazy and debauched nightlife that Phuket is so famous for, many people like nothing more than to whip out the credit cards and go on a well deserved spending spree. And why not, especially if you’re on holiday and want to splash out a bit.

Whether you are shopping for clothing, perfumes, electronics or jewellery, nowadays there is more than enough choice in the various convenient malls that have sprung up all over Phuket during recent years. The modern, air-conditioned shopping malls on the island provide the perfect antidote and haven from the hectic bartering, pushing and shoving that’s de rigeur in the street stalls and fresh markets. Most of the goods on offer in the shopping malls are good quality branded originals to boot, and you won’t come across the same quantity of fake goods that you can find everywhere at the beachside stalls.

Prices for items such as clothes cost considerably less in Phuket than you might find back home and in most western countries. Furthermore, tourists can obtain a discount card and reclaim back the 7% VAT tax when leaving Thailand, such as at the main airports. Make sure that you complete all the necessary paperwork at the point of sale and keep the receipts for any items that you buy. This means that, apart from various types of luxury goods, many items can be picked up at discounted prices. Furthermore, many mall shops hold regular sales with impressive discounts of up to 50% on occasion.

The fabulous thing about Phuket’s large malls are that as well as being great places to shop with plenty of consumer choice, they tend to have decent entertainment and dining options too. Several of the main shopping malls have cinemas, bowling alleys and even a nightclub, as well as a wealth of restaurants, bars and relaxing venues in which to chill out. The main malls in particular such as Jungceylon in Patong Beach and Central Festival in Phuket Town attract thousands of shoppers each day and are a great place to shop and hang out in the evening. So go on, blow the cobwebs off your wallet and check out the malls and department stores we’ve listed below.
Patong Beach
Jung Ceylon Shopping Mall
Jung Ceylon Shopping Mall
Jung Ceylon Shopping Mall
This major new development in Patong is now fully open. Business disputes delayed development by over a year but it opened in 2007.

There is plenty of parking underneath but not surprisingly they have started charging to stop people from using it as a parking base for their night out down Bangla Road. A shopping receipt from one of the major outlets will get 3-hours of free parking and only a small charge for staying beyond the allotted time.

This mall will certainly have a significant impact on the shopping scene in Patong. The beachside stalls selling their vastly overpriced trinkets and fakes will take a big hit. In the long run this can only be a good thing for visitors to Patong who have been overcharged for their shopping for far too long.
The SHOPPING
Few brands are available in Jungceylon, mostly at Robinson Department Store and in the first building. 'Big C' is now the supermarket since Carrefour is gone. Apple shop, computer shops and two gigantic sport shops should keep you busy for a while. For phones, games and electronics, go to the top floor of the second building, next to the cinemas.
The RESTAURANTS
Plenty of choice, but more pricey than anywhere else. Just to give you a scale: a double espresso at Starbucks is 100 Baht here while 80 Baht at Central Festival. The good side is that on a very hot day, you still can eat Thai food in an air con room.

Ocean Plaza Bangla (Patong)
Patong has Two Ocean department stores. Perhaps the most singular aspect of these shops is that they are in the form of a department store but really have the content of a bazaar. Three-storey Ocean on Bangla Road is a riot of colours and products ranging from costume jewelry to funny hats to name-brand shirts and trousers. The ground or 'first' floor is crammed with clothing and is surrounded by boutiques selling just about anything that tickles your fancy from camera tripods to iPods.

Prices are 'negotiable' here so bargain hard to get the asking price down as it will be set at an unrealistic level. There are some attractive pewter and china Thai handicrafts and those looking for a new high-powered rifle scope or night binoculars shouldn't be disappointed. Upstairs you will find name-brand clothes in stalls that appear to be built on top of each other as well as a small toy section. On the 'third' floor there is a large sports outlet and a bowling alley as well as a dimly lit snack and beer bar. In the basement there is a supermarket with reasonable (for Patong) prices.

Index Living Mall
Index Living Mall
Index Living Mall
This furniture store and shopping mall is on Chalermprakiat Road just north of Big C. The top floor is an Index furniture store. It is mass produced furniture and not the sort of produce you would think of exporting from Thailand. Downstairs is a small shopping mall including a nice Thai antiques and handicrafts shop. If you want to try sushi and other Japanese food, there is an Oishi restaurant that does an excellent buffet for 350 baht per person.

Another 300 metres further north is the Index Living Mall, a place that majors in chic household goods. Here, there are home theatre systems, artwork, bedding, kitchenware and even a few clothes outlets but the main part of the mall deals in high quality items such as pans, rugs and the like. And in case you get the munchies while shopping there's a rather incongruous food outlet right by the cashiers.
